After a train accident in 1891 that was caused by the stopping of the engineer's watch, the railroad association created stringent qualifications that pocket watches had to meet before being used by engineers.
After World War I, wrist watches became the timepiece of choice for most people, but pocketwatches still remained prized heirlooms, collectibles, and timepieces for people who find wristwatches uncomfortable. A pocket watch can be engraved with initials, a name, or a message, making these timepieces wonderful heirlooms and gifts.
