Swiss watch company Longine has been producing quality timepieces since 1832. If you want a watch that's classic, durable, timeless and beautiful, then you can't go wrong with this established company! Maybe you love a good pocketwatch. If so, you can find what you're looking for with Longine.
Many people collect pocketwatches. There are various reasons for this. One is the history and heritage involved. In 1492, a clockmaker offered the Marchese di Manta what he referred to as a pocket clock, and claimed it surpassed the one carried by the Duke of Moderna. Later in 1510, a locksmith from Nuremberg named Peter Henlein began manufacturing and distributing the first pocketwatches, which were well recieved and gained popularity through Europe.
There are two basic types of pocketwatches -- those without covers, and those with covers. Although coverless watches are often used in professional settings like in hospitals, the covered type are usually preferred by consumers. This is because the hinged cover provides not only attractiveness, but protection for the clock face. There are pocketwatches in every fine metal imaginable, from bronze to platinum.
In the 1600's, pocketwatches weren't carried in the pocket at all, but on a chain around the neck. They were large and cumbersome as compared to today's watches. In the 19th century, pocket watches were adopted as the official way to keep time for the railroad industry. Railroad watches had to meet a stringent set of criteria before being accepted for use. Pocketwatches were also the timepiece of choice for men, as wristwatches were seen as feminine accessories. However during World War II, it was discovered that a wristwatch was simply an easier way to keep time.
Since then, wristwatches have become popular and pocketwatches have declined in popularity. However, railroad enthusiasts and watch collectors alike still have great interest in these timepieces, such as the Longine pocketwatch. You can find Longine pocketwatches from different years, from the early 1900's to today.
Your local jeweler can direct you to Longine pocketwatches, or you can purchase one on the Internet. This brand of pocketwatch would make a fantastic gift for a collector, or for anyone experiencing a milestone. Pocketwatches are often kept as heirlooms and handed down from parent to child.
